For the entire first third of Matt’s career (13 years), 90% has been devoted to the litigation of all major types: civil (including small and medium-sized businesses), criminal (defense and prosecution), juvenile, and domestic relations/family law (including as Guardian ad Litem).  He credits his close mentors, who, together, have centuries of jury trial experience and timeless wisdom – not just about law practice and litigation, but also about understanding human psychology and sociology in both academic and empirical modes.

Matt has tried over 40 jury trials (including both civil and criminal cases), 60 bench trials (encompassing civil, criminal, and domestic matters), and several appeals.  Although he’s a thrill junkie for trying big and small cases to verdict, he understands that the greatest value a litigator can offer the client is effectively evaluating a case from all relevant sides – legal, procedural, factual, practical, and philosophical – and then usefully articulating that analysis.  He believes that the preferred form of legal dispute resolution is to “make your own justice” through compromised settlement, instead of trying to convince a judge or jury to choose where to saw the log apart.  When negotiation won’t do it, he understands the difference between being prepared for a fight and being ready for it.  Both are required, but one matters most.
